Groton - A.J.A. "Archie" Chester Jr., 84, of 256 Fort Hill Road, Groton, passed away Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012, at his home.

Mr. Chester was born on April 10, 1928, in New London, the son of the late A. James and Emilie (Miller) Chester and had been married on June 29, 1976, in Mystic, to the former Nancy J. Howard. Archie was a graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York and had also served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He then embarked on a long career as a mechanical engineer in the nuclear power industry.

Mr. Chester was a longtime and very active member of the New London Maritime Society, the Denison Society, and the Indian & Colonial Research Center in Old Mystic. Archie had also volunteered for many years at the Pleasant Valley Community of Prayer & Praise Soup Kitchen.

Besides his wife, Nancy, he is survived by his siblings, Kay Chester, Robert Chester and Susan Chester; his step-daughter, Carol Anne Arvanites and step-son, Timothy Belcher, 10 nieces and nephews, 11 grand nieces and two grand nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Louise Aguiar.

A memorial service in his honor will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at the Custom House Maritime Museum, 150 Bank St., New London.
