Alexander Nicholas Rand Obituary
East Lyme - Alexander Nicholas Rand, 25, passed away Friday night, Nov. 2, 2012, at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital after having a heart attack at his home. Alex had returned to Niantic to help his family clean their yard following Hurricane Sandy.

Alexander had a pre-existing heart condition, cardiomyopathy, which he and his family monitored closely over the years. Born on Sept. 11, 1987, and despite this condition, Alex thrived as a young man. Frequently on the honor roll at East Lyme High School, he played varsity lacrosse and was also an acolyte at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church. He graduated from East Lyme High School in 2005. He studied business administration at Drexel University, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in 2009. He loved many sports and hobbies, skiing at Okemo and most recently Vail, sailing and fishing with his friends and family in Niantic Bay. Along with his great urge to share, Alex loved cooking many marvelous meals for his family and friends.

Alexander was an incredibly vibrant, sweet-hearted young gentleman, vested with great poise and determination in his many pursuits. While still in high school, he worked at the Niantic Cinemas and was an integral part of the family business. Immediately following college, he continued to live in Philadelphia where he began his career at Smith and Nephew Healthcare, quickly establishing himself as a leading sales representative in the advanced surgical device division.

Alexander leaves a large void in many hearts. He reached many people over the years and will be missed. He was an enormous help to his loving parents, Lea (Mitchell) Rand and Albert LeRoy Rand; and his brothers, Adam and Max; his grandparents, Esther and Terry Mitchell, Mary Rand, the late Albert Rand Sr.; his aunts and uncles, Joanne Mitchell, Nancy and Armand Mazzulli, Peter Mitchell, Kathrin Burmester, Brenda and Bobby Murphy, Debbie and Tom Gilmore, Jonathan and Cindy Rand; and his cousins, Zoe, Armand, Kimberly, Keith, Christopher, Carrie-Anne, Ericka, and Caleb.

The wake is from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Nov. 5, at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 48 Grand St., Niantic. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, New London.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the East Lyme High School Alexander Rand Scholarship Fund to benefit students pursuing a degree in business, c/o Citizens Bank, 43 Pennsylvania Ave., Niantic, CT 06357.
