Norwich - Alice Elizabeth "Beth" (Hargreaves) Howarth, 90, passed away on Saturday. May 12, 2012, at the Norwichtown Rehab.
She was born on May 9, 1922, in Lawrence, Mass., to Pickles and Annie A. (Armytage) Hargreaves. She graduated from Edward F. Searles High School in Methuen, Mass., class of 1940.
On May 9, 1943, she married Spencer W. Howarth, who predeceased her in 1988.
Mrs. Howarth was active in Girl Scouts at St. Joseph School in Norwich and was the neighborhood chairman for the troops in Greenville. She volunteered in Montville Town offices, the Montville Service Unit for the Salvation Army as secretary/treasurer, and for the Energy Program of TVCCA as an intake worker.
She was employed in several businesses in the Norwich area, retiring as the registrar in the Alumni Office at Connecticut College in New London in 1982. She helped organize an Alumni Office at St. Bernard High School in Montville as well.
Mrs. Howarth was a member of the Ladies Auxilary of Montville Post 10060, former commissioner on the Montville Housing Authority, a member of the Board of Trustees of TVCCA, past officer of Montville Senior Citizens, and a member of the Norwich Senior Center.
She is survived by a son, two daughters, five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, and by caring neighbors, the O'Keeffe family for over 45 years.
She was predeceased by six brothers and a great-granddaughter.

Church & Allen Funeral Home, 136 Sachem St., Norwich, is in charge of arrangements.
