Waterford - Amelia (Nellie) Hrynko, 99, of Waterford, passed away peacefully at Bayview Healthcare Center, her home for the last seven years, on 301 Rope Ferry Road, Waterford, about 5:15 p.m. Sunday, July 29, 2012. Her son Robert was by her side.
Amelia was born on May 31, 1913, in Oakdale, the daughter of the late Andrew and Emilia (Skalenski) Kruszewski, who came to this country from Russia. Amelia grew up on a dairy farm and attended school in Quaker Hill. She worked as a seamstress before marrying Dominic Galminas, who was serving in the U.S. Navy at the New London Naval Submarine Base in 1935. They were married at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Roman Catholic Church in Quaker Hill.
She was the loving mother of two children, Robert and Myrna, born in 1937 and 1938 respectively, who currently reside in southeastern Connecticut and have been steadfast in remaining near and dear in both heart and proximity. In 1949, Amelia was married to John Hrynko, a resident of Montville, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. They were married at Saints Peter and Paul Polish National Catholic Church in New London.
Amelia became the beloved grandmother of four children and great-grandmother of five children. She was a talented gardener and an excellent cook, who particularly enjoyed cooking for her family members. She was a kind and compassionate soft-spoken lady, while at the same time possessing sharp wit and a great sense of humor. She was a generous and giving soul, always eager to lend a helping hand, and adored and admired by her family and her friends of whom there were many. She will be sorely missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Amelia was predeceased by her husband, John Hrynko, who passed away in 1974; and her first husband, Dominic Galminas, who passed away in 1959. She was also predeceased by her father, Andrew Kruszewski; her mother, Emilia (Skalenski); her stepmother, Stephania (Swiderski); her brothers, Leo, Joseph, Stanley, Raymond, and Andrew "Andy"; and her sisters, Mary and Viola.
She is survived by her son Robert, of Uncasville; her daughter, Myrna (Galminas) Comiskey, of Niantic; grandchildren Elizabeth (Giordano) Mitchell of Lincoln, N.H., Lisa Galminas of Natchitoches, La., Tim Galminas of Clintonville, Wis., and Sondra (Comiskey) Griswold and her husband, Martin Griswold of Old Lyme; great-grandchildren Bryan Giordano, Heather and Eric Mitchell, and John Alexander "Ali" and Henry Martin "Huck" Griswold; and her sisters, Antoinette (Tony) Beauregard of Oceanside, Calif., and Stephanie Eggert of Norwich.
The family would like to express its gratitude to the staff at Bayview Healthcare Center in Waterford for their compassion and attentive care during Amelia's stay as a resident.
