Groton - Andrew H. Apicelli "Appy", 83, of 144 Azalea Drive, Groton, passed away on Wednesday evening, June 8, 2011, at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London, surrounded by his children.

He was born in Groton on Sept. 18, 1927, the son of Henry and Elizabeth (Hreschak) Apicelli. Andrew married his childhood sweetheart, Leonore Giardina on April 16, 1955, in New London. Leonore passed away July 11, 2001.
Andrew graduated from Chapman Technical High School in 1945. He served in the U.S. Navy in 1945 and 1946, and also in the Korean War from 1950 to 1954. He served in Guam, and on destroyer tenders Piedmont, Prairie and Dixie. He also had served in the Connecticut National Guard 238th AAA Battalion.
Andy worked for 42 years, retiring in 1991 as a supervisor in structural design, at General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton.
He was an avid baseball and softball player in the region. In baseball, he was a member of the 1944 Chapman Tech team that won the southeastern conference championship. He also played for the Whalers, and St. Joseph's, in the Morgan Park league. He played softball for the Polish Citizens Club in the New London City league, and the structural design team in the E.B. League, winning seven consecutive championships.
He also bowled in the New London City duckpin league, played volleyball in the Groton Town league, and played basketball for the National Guard 238th AAA Battalion in the New London City league. Andy also coached in the Poquonnock Bridge Little League.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, and the E.B. Retired Employees Association.
A devoted family man, he is survived by his four children, Donna Sherriff and husband, Marv, of Waterford, Ron Apicelli and wife, Cathy, of Waterford, Keith Apicelli and wife, Kathy, of East Lyme, Kim Evans and husband, Chris, of Norwich; eight grandchildren, Jennifer and husband, Michael Wheeler, Michael Sherriff, Kym & Andrew Apicelli, Amanda and Christopher Apicelli, Chelsea and Elise Evans; and one great-grandchild, Danielle Wheeler. He is also survived by his brother, Henry; and sister in-law, Bette Apicelli of Niantic.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Church, Sacred Heart Drive, Groton. Interment will be in St. Mary Cemetery, New London. Visiting hours will be Monday, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St., Groton.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations in Andy's memory be directed to The Chapman Technical High School Alumni Association Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 1321, New London, CT 06320.
