Groton - Blanche M. Aker, 91, of 251 Drozdyk Drive, Groton, passed away on Friday, April 27, 2012, at Lawrence &d Memorial Hospital in New London.

She was born in Baltimore, Md., on Feb. 7, 1921. She was raised by her grandparents, Sinclair and Julia Ann Grimstead. Her husband, Surgest P. Aker Sr. passed away April 30, 1961.
Blanche worked as a shipfitter at Electric Boat Co., during World War II. She then worked in the bindery department there until her retirement.
Blanche is survived by three sons, Darnell A. and William R. Aker of New London and Surgest P. Aker II and his wife, Emily, of Madison, Ala.; two daughters, Majolie Aker of New London and Scherne Aker of Killeen, Texas; a sister, Joyce Holder of New London; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Blanche had also raised several foster children.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, 60 Blackhall St., New London. Interment will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery. Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St. New London.
