Bruce Carpenter Obituary

Stonington - Bruce R. Carpenter, 69, of Stonington, husband of 20 years to Lisa (Alden) Carpenter, passed away unexpectedly, Saturday, June 21, 2014.

Born in Norwich, he was the son of the late Nelson and Nina (Sackett) Carpenter and lived in Stonington for most of his life.

He owned and operated for the past 22 years the Green Marble Coffee House in downtown Mystic and will be missed by his many friends, loyal customers, and dedicated co-workers who were like family to Bruce. Prior to his coffee business, he was a biology teacher at Plainfield High School and worked for the former Mystic Color Lab for 18 years.

When not working at the coffee house, Bruce enjoyed scuba diving, snorkeling, traveling, and was an avid pool player.

In addition to his wife, he leaves his two children, Deanna Carpenter-Scott and her husband, Heath, of Colorado, and Aaron Carpenter of Washington; sister, Ann Maffio of Plainfield; a granddaughter, Veda Blue; mother-in-law, Judith Alden of Pawcatuck; niece, Debra Breten and her husband, Gary, of Killingly; two nephews, James Maffio and Richard Simpson, both of Rhode Island; brother-in-law, Eric Alden of Rhode Island; his former mother-in-law, Louise Fayal of Stonington; and his beloved pets, Radar and Ozy.

He was predeceased by his siblings, Paul and Nelson Carpenter, and his former father-in-law, Alfred "Freddy" Fayal.

A reception to honor Bruce's life will be held at the family's home at 12 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, at 250 North Water St., Stonington.

I am glad to have had you in my life. I know since becoming a mom I wasn't able to spend as much time as I would have liked with you and Lisa but it was always a great comfort in our conversations picking up like no time at all had passed. I remember whenever I traveled anywhere that I would check in with you and everyone at The Marble before contacting my own family. I have had so many wonderful people and great memories in my life due to the haven you created. Thank you. You will be missed .

Bruce, your presence through the Green Marble helped keep real community alive in downtown Mystic. Your legacy will be felt for a long time to come, through your friends, family, staff present and past, and customers who benefited from the unique atmosphere of the Marble. You are missed.

Miss you already. You are such a huge part of downtown Mystic culture. My fondest memories from childhood center around your creation. I was talking with a mutual friend and he rightfully pointed out that he and I would never have met if not for you. You and the Green Marble are the commonality in a significant portion in the Mystic social circles. It doesn't feel real. You are missed. Thank you for your contributions to my life. You helped so many people in ways you may not be aware of.
