Groton - Bruno Maiolo, 91, of Groton, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012, surrounded by his loving family at the Groton Regency.
Bruno was born in Nardodipace, Italy on Oct. 29, 1920, the son of Domenico and Maria Rosaria (Demasi) Maiolo. He was the widower of Maria Rosa Maiolo, who passed away April 30, 2011.
Bruno worked in Switzerland and Italy and had served in the Italian Army during World War II. He became a prisoner of war and was held in the United States. He then worked for the City of Groton Highway Department and after his retirement, worked as a crossing guard for the City Police Department.
He is survived by two sons and a daughter, Stella, Domenic and Frank and their spouses; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Carmela Maiolo of Groton; and his nieces and nephews and their families. Bruno also has brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bruno and Maria, Ilario and Silvana, nieces and nephews in Sydney, Australia.
The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital, the Groton Regency and the staff of Vitas Hospice.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 14, at Sacred Heart Church, Sacred Heart Drive, Groton. Interment will be in Colonel Ledyard Cemetery. Visiting hours will be from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St. Groton.
