East Lyme - Calvin L. Hutchinson, 85, most recently of Belton, S.C., formerly of Waterford and Niantic, passed away peacefully after an extended illness on May 4, 2013, at Middlesex Hospital.

Calvin was born in North Hornell, N.Y., on Dec. 12, 1927, the son of Clarence and Dorothy Hutchinson. He graduated from Haverling High School and attended Cornell University prior to entering the U.S. Navy, serving almost 16 years. For his service to our country, Calvin was honored with the Navy Cross, the Silver Star, as well as two Purple Hearts during the American Theatre and Asiatic Pacific Campaigns. His most notable naval accomplishment was graduating from Underwater Demolition Team (UDT Class 1), known today as the Navy SEALs.
He greatly enjoyed many hobbies and activities. Calvin was an avid reader, chef, and fisherman. He also took great pleasure in gardening and woodworking. Calvin was employed at Electric Boat as a machinist before becoming a nuclear field engineer at various U.S. nuclear facilities prior to his retirement in 1993.
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 wonderful years, Ruth A. Hutchinson; daughters, Janine Stovall of Anderson, S.C., Tammy (Arthur) Sullivan of Ivoryton, and Jean Reil of Chelsea, Mass.; stepdaughters, Barbara Kiely of New London, Marion Frink of East Lyme, and Linda (Richard) Merschdorf of Florence, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
His stepson, Walter Sylvia of Stuttgart, Germany, predeceased him.
The service will be at the convenience of the family.
