Redding - Charles D. Beaumont III, 82, of Redding, formerly of Mystic and Greenwich, died Jan. 11, 2013.|
Mr. Beaumont was born on March 8, 1930, on the island of Oahu when the Hawaiian Islands were only a territory of the United States, to Capt. Charles D. Beaumont Jr. and Jeannette S. Beaumont. Mr. Beaumont graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1948 and the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1953. He was then commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines, 2nd Marine Division.
Mr. Beaumont married his high school sweetheart, Audrey I. Greenleaf, on June 27, 1953, in Washington, D.C. She predeceased him in May, 2012.
Mr. Beaumont and his wife owned and operated Mystic Shipyard in Mystic for over 20 years. Mr. Beaumont also designed and built the Mystic Yachting Center. He was a founder of the Bank of Mystic and the Stonington Country Club. Previously he was chairman of the board for The Mystic Aquarium and also a trustee of the Mystic Congregational Church. He was a longtime member of Rotary and worked on their scholarship programs.
Prior to coming to Mystic, he was a nuclear power specialist with General Electric Co., managing the marketing of nuclear power stations in the U.S. and around the world. During his early career with G.E., he handled contract negotiations with the Atomic Energy Commission. He worked with the United Nations to start the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, Austria.
Charles was the loving father of a large family who will miss him dearly. He leaves his sister, Jeannette Cobean of Greenwich; four children, Teresa S. Beaumont of Redding, Gina B. Pelcher (Jack) of Jupiter, Fla., C. David Beaumont IV (Susan) of Nantucket, Mass., Steven J. Beaumont of Riverside; 11 grandchildren, William Charles Beaumont (Suzanne) of New Milford, Rebecca B. Talcott (Jim) of Redding, Lindsay Lepage (Matthew) of Williston,Vt., Jeffrey (Beau) Seaver of Williston, Vt., Desiree Beaumont of New York City, Adelle Beaumont of Durham, N.H., Brianna Beaumont of Boston, Kelly Beaumont of New York City, Steven J. Beaumont Jr. of Stamford, Heather Beaumont of Stamford, Lauren Beaumont of Hartford; three great-grandchildren, Andrew, Gabriella, and Isabella; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 17, at the Mystic Congregational Church, 43 East Main St., Mystic. Burial will follow at the Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic.
