Ledyard - David E. Beene Jr., 64, of 422 Colonel Ledyard Highway, Ledyard, died at his residence on Monday morning, Feb. 25, 2013, surrounded by his family, after a long and courageous battle with bladder cancer.|
He was born March 1, 1948, in Dinuba, Calif., the son of Ruby (Dupree) Beene and David E. Beene Sr. He spent his formative years growing up in his beloved state of Oklahoma.
He married Barbara Lindsey Beene in Noank, on Sept. 12, 1981.
Mr. Beene worked for the U.S. Civil Service as a fire safety research specialist for the U.S. Coast Guard for 35 years. He is a U.S. Army veteran having served in South Korean during the Vietnam Era.
In addition to his wife, Barbara, he is survived by his son, David L. Beene and a daughter, Cynthia L. Beene, both of Ledyard.
David was an active man who enjoyed participating in many different activities, including tennis, golf, and volleyball. After retiring, he had a small construction company with one of his closest friends. He took great pride in the many things he built. He also was a voracious reader, spending many enjoyable hours at the Ledyard Library.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Friday at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 1650 Route 12, Gales Ferry. Burial will follow in Avery Stoddard Cemetery. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday at Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London, CT 06320.
