Born on Oct. 14, 1929, in the Bronx, N.Y., Don was the son of Frank and Helen (Schubert) Garvin.

He enlisted in the Navy in 1946 and served until his retirement in 1968. Early in his naval career, Don served on the USS Molala (ATF106) and the USS Perkins (DDR877) during the Korean War. He later went to the U.S. Navy Diving School, where he became a deep sea diver and subsequently served on the USS Fulton (AS11) and USS Tringa (ASR16). Don was a longtime member of the Retired Armed Forces Association (RAFA) in New London.

Don is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Helen (Enasko) of Niantic; his daughters, Pennie Garvin of Moodus and Helen "Jean" and son-in-law, Brian Smith, of Colchester; and three grandchildren, Zachary Manafort, presently on active duty with the U.S. Army in Afghanistan, Stephanie Smith of Philadelphia, Pa., and Maxwell Smith, who reports for his enlistment in the U.S. Army on Oct. 10.
