Dorothy M. Shaw Obituary
Waterford - Dorothy M. Shaw, 84, of Quaker Hill, entered eternal life on Feb. 10, 2013.

She was born March 24, 1928, in New Haven, the daughter of the late George and Gladys (Pokornicky) Shaw. She was educated in New London schools, graduating from Chapman Technical High School in 1946. She earned her bachelor of arts degree from Connecticut College for Women in 1952, and graduated from the University of Connecticut School of Social Work in 1965, with a master's degree of social work. Ms. Shaw was employed by the State of Connecticut for 33 years in social services positions, retiring in 1988 as the regional director of the Department of Children and Youth Services, now the Department of Children and Families for the Norwich region. After retiring, Dorothy volunteered for the United Way, Literacy Volunteers, and Lyman Allyn Art Museum. She as a communicant of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, serving as a Lector for many years.

She is survived by a niece, Michele and husband, Cliff Tracey, and children, Kayla and Brian; nephew, Glen and wife, Eileen Brown, and children, Kristina and Matthew; nephew, James Brown and children, Jennifer and J.P., all of New Jersey; and the Hammond family, Ned and Patricia Hammond of New London and their families.

She was predeceased by her sister, Barbara Brown in 2000; companion, Jack Spinnato in 2005; nephews, Gary Brown in 1988, and Robert Brown in 2003.

Her family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Impellitteri-Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Ave., New London. The funeral will assemble at 9 a.m. on Friday and proceed to a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Quaker Hill. Interment will be in St. Mary Cemetery, New London.
