East Lyme - Dorothy Mary Faulkner, 85, formerly of Marion Drive, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2012, at Bayview Healthcare Center, Waterford, after a lengthy illness.
She was born in Hartford, on Dec. 7, 1926, the daughter of Daniel J. and Elizabeth (Tanner) Sullivan. She married Ivan S. Faulkner on Sept. 16, 1950 at The Cathedral of St. Joseph, Hartford. Mr. Faulkner predeceased her on Feb. 11, 2006.
Dorothy graduated from St. Joseph Cathedral School in 1942, and then graduated from Hartford Public High School in 1945. She studied voice at the Hartford School of Music. She performed at the Bushnell and on WTIC Radio under her stage name of "Dori King". She was the soloist at St. James Church in Manchester in the 1940's. From 1950-1960, she served as the Connecticut Department Soloist Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She was director of the St. Agnes Church Junior Choir from 1958 to 1964 and was a member of the St. Agnes Resurrection Choir until her illness. She was an active member of the East Lyme Senior Citizens, serving multiple officer positions. She was also a member of the Lymes Chapter of AARP.
She is survived by two daughters, Ann E. Sullivan and her husband, John, of Groton and Eileen Bagwell and her husband, Karl, of East Lyme; and four grandchildren, Samantha Batch and her husband, Kevin, Patrick Sullivan and his wife, AnneFay, Kelley Sullivan and Lauren Bagwell.
Prior to her illness, she could be seen in and around Niantic with a smile and calling everyone "honey bun". The family finds Dorothy's birth and death dates are shared with two major U.S. history events, her birthday being the attack on Pearl Harbor in her teens and her death on the anniversary of V-J Day (victory over Japan).
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 20, 2012, at St. Agnes Church, Haigh Street, Niantic. Interment will follow in East Lyme Cemetery, East Lyme. Family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19, 2012, at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons East Lyme Funeral Home, 48 Grand St., Niantic.
