East Lyme - Dorothy (Little) Shepherd, longtime resident of Niantic, passed away on May 11, 2012, surrounded by her family.
She was born in New London, on May 5, 1926, the daughter of Rose (Calendini) Little and James Little. She graduated from Williams Memorial Institute in 1945.
Dorothy married William Shepherd Jr. in 1947, and had 52 wonderful years prior to his death in 1999. She spoke often of her adventures during the ‘38 Hurricane while attending Nameag School in New London. Dottie and Bill traveled extensively throughout the United States before and after his retirement from Pfizer.
Dorothy is survived by a daughter, Janet Orowson and her husband, David Orowson, and a grandson, Matthew Orowson, of Uncasville; and a son, James Shepherd of Niantic and his son, Nathaniel Staub, of Killington, Vt. She leaves behind a sister-in-law, Mildred Damico of Gainesville, Va.; as well as many nieces and nephews; and Dottie treasured her devoted friend, Madelyn Schuller of Corydon, Ind.
She was predeceased by her sister, Mary Berger, formerly of Groton.
Dorothy loved gardening, reading, baking, crossword puzzles, and movie classics. Family get-togethers were spiced with spirited games of Uno, Phase 10, and Rook with her grandson, Matt.
Private funeral services will be provided by Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home in New London.
In lieu of flowers, Dorothy would love for you to plant a shrub in your yard in her honor. Donations may also be made to the East Lyme Ambulance Association, 8 Grand St., Niantic, CT 06357.
