Norwich - Edward O. Sanborn, 62, died on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012, at his home surrounded by family, after a brief illness.

He was born on April 21, 1950, to Amzi and Frances (Baker) Sanborn in Alexandria, Va. After completing school, Ed joined the U.S. Army, where he served his country until his honorable discharge. In his civilian life, Ed worked at various jobs, his last being as a slot technician for the Mohegan Sun.
Ed was married to his beloved wife Susan (Strong) on Nov. 19, 1976, at the First Congregational Church in Norwichtown. Together they raised their family. Ed or "Eddie" as he was known by his brothers and sisters in the fire department, was a dedicated life member of the Yantic Fire Engine Company #1. He will be remembered as being a "gentle giant" who was quiet, sincere and kind to all, even when being a jokester with those around him. He was devoted to his wife and daughters.
He is survived by his wife, Susan; daughters, Erin Jones and her husband, Jason, Melanie and Elizabeth Sanborn; sisters, Judy Perkowski and her husband, Henry, Cindy and her husband, Mark Carchidi; numerous nieces and nephews; and countless friends.
He was predeceased by his father.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight (Oct. 5), at Church & Allen Funeral Home, 136 Sachem St., Norwich. A Funeral Service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, meeting directly at the First Congregational Church on the Norwichtown green, immediately followed by burial with Military Honors at Maplewood Cemetery in Norwich.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either Hospice Southeastern Connecticut or Yantic Fire Engine Co. #1.
