Old Saybrook - Evelyn Frances Leahy of Old Saybrook, was welcomed home by her Lord on Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012.

The youngest of four children, Evelyn was born to John Joseph Leahy and Elizabeth (Mullen) Leahy, joining her siblings James, John and Marie on July 31, 1927. Always a devout Catholic family, following the death of her father when she was 14, Ebby was mentored by and came to call as family, Monsignor Harold F. Daly. Father Daly had a profound impact on Ebby's life and, along with her Mom, family and friends, contributed to the full life Ebby felt fortunate to have. We know that Ebby is now reunited with all those she so dearly loved and has sorely missed.

A self-made and self-sufficient woman for much of her life, Evelyn, known as "Ebby" to those closest to her, lived her life honestly, humbly and in every way as her Catholic upbringing dictated. She was forever generous to those in need, especially those lucky enough to call her family. Throughout her life, many family and friends benefited from her generosity and compassion. She, in turn, gained deep satisfaction and contentment from knowing she was able to help. She will be sorely missed.

A wonderful, funny, caring and giving person, Evelyn was the very special Aunt to her nieces and nephews, Kathleen (Sullivan) Fede and husband, Leo, Barbara (Sullivan) Robertson and husband, Matt, Sheila Sullivan and husband, Richard, Tracey (Sullivan) Lagasse, James Leahy (deceased) and wife, Jan, Jack Sullivan, Daniel Leahy and wife, Roseanne, and Michael Leahy and wife, Maureen.

In addition to her parents, John and Elizabeth, Evelyn was predeceased by her siblings, James, John and Marie. She was also predeceased by some very special cousins-all close to her in age-who grew up, laughed, loved, vacationed and played together. It was a good life.

In addition to her nieces and nephews, Ebby is survived by many beloved members of her extended family, great nieces and nephews and children of her cousins, all too numerous to count. She is also survived by her cousins, Delores, Joan and Kathy. Also left to mourn Ebby's passing is Donna Carr, her devoted caregiver for the past three years.

Calling hours will be held between 5 and 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, at the Swan Funeral Home, 1224 Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, at St. John's Church, Main Street, Old Saybrook. Burial will be at Mount St. Benedict Cemetery in Bloomfield and is private at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Evelyn's name to St. John's School, 42 Maynard Road, Old Saybrook, CT 06475.
