Stonington - Francis "Frank" W. Ladwig, 95, of Stonington, husband of 61 years to the late Mary (Feerick) Ladwig, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2012, at home.
Born in Fergus Falls, Minn., he was the son of the late William F. and Louise (Guslander) Ladwig and was raised in Montana and North Dakota. He graduated from North Dakota State University in 1938 and attended Harvard Business School. He served in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of Lt. Col. supplying the Allied Invasion of Normandy and General Patton's Third Army with the Red Ball Express. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
After his military service, Frank spent his business career with the Burroughs Corp., where he helped develop their first business computer, the E101. Following his retirement, he taught in the marketing department at Boston College.
He enjoyed vacations with his family, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and spending time sitting at grandma's pool at their home in Stonington. Frank also enjoyed playing golf, horses, dogs and a cat. He will be missed and was loved by his nieces across the country, his many friends in Stonington and especially his nurse and caregiver, Alicia Williamson and his caregiver, Anna Wakulczyk.
He is survived by his son, Ted Ladwig and his wife, Cindy, of Stonington; and daughter, Mary Lou Johnson and her husband, Dwight, of Stonington and Bangkok, Thailand; grandson, Jim Ladwig and his wife, Debbie, and their son, Quinn; three granddaughters, Beth Leamon and her husband, John, and their children, Claire and Ted, Allison Agnello and Kate Kolsky and her husband, Zak; sister, Carol Johnson; and his nieces, Lynne Manaugh, Laurie Gruenig, Joan, Carolyn and Lorine Sweeney and Mary Ellen Berzin.
Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31, at the Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1, Mystic. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, at St. Mary Church, 95 Main St., Stonington. Burial with full military honors will be held at St. Mary Cemetery, Route 1, Stonington.
