Chester - Frederick Edward Acker, 90, of Chester Village West and formerly of Old Lyme, died on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, at Middlesex Memorial Hospital.|
Mr. Acker was born on Feb. 18, 1919, in Astoria, N.Y., the son of Carl and Louisa Braun Acker.
He married Frances L. Acker on Oct. 3, 1943, in Astoria, and they enjoyed 66 years of marriage. His wife, Frances, predeceased him on Oct. 15, 2009.
Mr. Acker was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He receives a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute and business certificates from Rutgers University. He worked as a business manager for NBC-NBCTV in New York City. In 1965, he joined Electric Boat/General Dynamics in Groton, and the family subsequently moved to Old Lyme.
Before and after retirement, he and Frances were active members of St. Ann's Episcopal Church where Fred sang in the church choir. He loved to sing and was an active member of Capella Cantorum, and also a member of the Con Brio singing group. Mr. and Mrs. Acker enjoyed trips to Europe with the Capella group.
Mr. Acker is survived by his daughters, Karen O' Malley of Tonawanda, N.Y., Marlene Macnaughtan and her husband, Don, of New Martinsville, W.Va., and Wendy Boehm and her husband, Paul, of Leesport, Pa.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service and interment for both Fred and Frances Acker will be held at a later date, which will be announced. Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, Old Lyme is handling arrangements.
