Waterford - Frederick "Poppie" H. Wallace, 78, husband of Dorothy J. (Prink) Wallace of Waterford, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London.

Born in New London, Fred married Dorothy in 1956. Fred graduated New London High School and was quickly employed as a lineman for Connecticut Light & Power until his retirement in 1992. During the early years of employment, you could almost guarantee that two hours before Thanksgiving dinner was to be served, Fred would be called out to work. His second career was driving the senior citizen van for Waterford. He truly enjoyed driving the lovely ladies and gentlemen to their appointments and transporting them to their daily events.

Fred earned the affectionate nickname "Poppie" by treating all of his friends and relations as a member of his own family. During the frequent summer events he hosted, he could always be found acting as the official pool boy and during the winter holidays, he was the official chef. His charisma and quick wit transformed these occasions into truly special events. Gatherings were not just about immediate family for him; they included all who could attend. Traditions and memories were created in his presence. Fred was a very generous person, always volunteering to help others. He was a great dad, husband, grandfather, and friend to all those he touched in his life.

In addition to his wife Dorothy, of over 55 years, he will be sadly missed by his children, Robert W. Wallace, Jean L. Wallace and significant other, Bruce Benvie, and Susan L. Strong and husband, William. Fred is also survived by grandchildren, Matthew Foster, Samantha Strong, Christopher Wallace and Michael Blank. Never forgetting his trusty companion, MacGregor.

He was predeceased by his mother, Mildred Beaney Wallace.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons East Lyme Funeral Home, 48 Grand St., Niantic. Burial services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to remember Fred in a special way, may make a donation to the Waterford/East Lyme Animal Shelter, 41 Avery Lane, Waterford, CT 06385.

Condolence messages may be left on Fred's memory page at www.neilanfuneralhome.com
