Groton - George F. Marshall, 73, of 17 High St., Groton, passed away Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, at his home.|
He was born on Oct. 20, 1939, in New London, the son of Jack and Mary Estelle (Hazzard) Marshall.
George had been married to the former Gloria (Burbine) Pocock on Sept. 22, 1990, in Old Mystic.
A 1957 graduate of Robert E. Fitch Senior High School in Groton, he began a 33-year career with the General Dynamics Corp., at Electric Boat in Groton in 1966. From 1966 to 1991, he worked in the computer sciences department and from 1992 until his retirement in 1999, as a data entry operator.
George was a real sports fan, rooting for both the New York Yankees and the N.Y. football Giants. He was also a huge fan of the UConn men's and women's basketball teams as well as the UConn football team. Though he became a paraplegic at age 15, he participated in various sports such as bowling, archery, and pocket billiards, but wheelchair basketball was his favorite. He played for the New Haven Spokebenders from 1965 to 1969.
Besides his wife, Gloria, he leaves his step-children, James, John, and Jeffrey Pocock of Sherman Mills, Maine, Kathryn Pocock of Uncasville, Timothy Pocock of Groton, Gregory Pocock of Baltic; 12 step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; his niece, Barbara M. Herman of Goffstown, N.H.; a nephew, William G. Herman of Concord, N.H.; and his two beloved cats, Dusty and Ginger.
George was predeceased by his sister, Beverly Lou Herman.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, at Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St., with his burial following in Colonel Ledyard Cemetery, Groton. There will be a visiting hour from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday prior to his service at the funeral home.
