Old Lyme - Helen Louise Barlow, life long resident of Old Lyme, passed away on Monday, Sept. 15, 2008, at Bayview Health Care Center in Waterford.|
She was born on July 23, 1916, in Mystic, and was the daughter and only child of Walter and Winifred Canning Johns.
Helen was a member of the Old Lyme Congregational Church for over 75 years. Her youthful years included graduating from the Old Lyme School, participating in athletics, and becoming an accomplished pianist, along with time spent as an assistant to Miss Florence Griswold.
On Oct. 3, 1938, after having driven alone across country in her new Ford, she and Joseph were married at the Boulder Dam. They traveled back to Old Lyme and raised five children, teaching their faith in God, pride in their country, creating bounteous feasts harvested from their garden and the sea, along with their indomitable spirit and work ethic.
Helen's greatest joy was her family, and she, theirs. Her children were her life- "her gifts" - but all children gave her great joy. She volunteered at Seaside Regional Center, and Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, along with her beloved Congregational Church. Her particular attention to the children at Seaside was just one example of Helen's extraordinary compassion and love for others. She was employed for twelve years by Regional School District 13. Helen was also a voracious reader and lover of art, music, and most of all, making others happy. In her countless acts of kindness and selflessness, boundless love and joy for life, she was a role model for others. Her presence was a blessing for all.
Mrs. Barlow is survived by her husband of 69 years, Joseph L. Barlow, Sr.; her son Joseph L. Barlow, Jr., and his wife Linda Biehl Barlow of Old Saybrook; her daughters Beverly Davies and her husband Frederick of Ledyard; Bonnie Cerruti of Essex; Helen Slocum of Arcade, N.Y., and Nina Schmid of Fishers Island, N.Y.; ten grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.
A private graveside service will be held in Duck River Cemetery, Old Lyme. There are no calling hours.
Memorial donations in her memory may be made to the First Congregational Church, 2 Ferry Rd., Old Lyme, CT 06371.

HERE IS ALL I'VE COUNTED SPLENDID
Write it down, when I have perished:
Here is everything I've cherished;
That these walls should glow with beauty
Spurred my lagging soul to duty;
That there should be gladness here
Kept me toiling, year by year...
Every thought and every act
Were to keep this home intact.- Edgar A. Guest
