Herbert Roy "H.R." Kuhn M.D.

Herbert Kuhn Obituary

Sarasota, Fla. - Herbert "H.R." Roy Kuhn, M.D., 88, passed away on Thursday, March 28, 2013, in Sarasota, where he had relocated after a full career in obstetrics and gynecology in New London.

Dr. Kuhn was born on Nov. 15, 1924, in Vernon, Texas, the only child of Herbert Roy and Texas Kuhn. He was raised and educated in Texas, attending medical school at the University of Texas in Galveston. He obtained his residency and fellowship training in New York City, Denver, Colo., and New Haven.

After finishing his training, he and his wife, Mary (Varley) Kuhn, and their two children, made a home in New London where he established a thriving ob-gyn practice, a source of enormous satisfaction. Alongside his work as a physician, he commenced a series of local real estate projects, enjoying hands on construction as well as building oversight. He loved the shoreline and mountains, and the family shared great times on the water and in Vermont.

He is survived by his daughter, Dr. Kris Kuhn of Mystic; his son, Mark Kuhn of Groton; and his daughter from a second marriage, Barbara Davis Kuhn of Mystic; five grandchildren, Lauryl (Kuhn) Spera of Ledyard, Joseph Kuhn of Waterford, Rachel Kuhn of New London, and Naya and Madison Kuhn of Mystic; and one great-granddaughter, Sofia Spera of Ledyard.

His family holds him in love, and will remember especially his brand of enduring optimism, his industriousness and core strength, and the satisfaction of joining him in very simple pleasures - sharing coffee, going for a drive.

They want to express deep appreciation to his two extraordinary caregivers in Sarasota, George Petrie and Brandon Vieweg. During his time of failing health, George and Brandon made bearable his distant location in Florida, and were a source of great comfort.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

I was great friends with Davi as a young child and H.R. was a very big part of my life, I spent all summer and almost everyday with Davi and H.R. at their house in Groton Long Point. When they relocated to Florida I was invited to visit. I owe many of my best childhood memories to Davi and H.R. He was always so good to me; nothing but very fond memories. My deepest sympathies to the whole Kuhn family. Rest in Peace H.R. xo

He taught me so many wonderful things. He taught me how to give unconditional love. He taught me what it means to be a true friend. Most of all, he taught me to recognize the importance of small moments of joy and to cherish each of them. He will always be my "best friend"!

So very sorry for your loss. He was my doctor for two of our children and I have such fond memories of him. His Texas sense of humor for one thing, and the fact that he was so proud of his construction skills. I asked him one time if he was afraid of hurting his hands because he was a surgeon. He replied that he planned to live his life to the fullest. I hope that he did.
