James Perkins Obituary

Groton - James George Perkins Jr., 82, of Poquonnock Road, entered eternal life on Saturday, April 27, 2013, after a brave battle with lung cancer, with his family by his side.

He was born in Niantic, on June 22, 1930, to his loving parents James G. Perkins Sr. and Laura (Olsen) Perkins. He was the oldest of eight children. James was a devoted husband for 55 years to his beloved wife Joan (Meagher) Perkins.

James served in the U.S. Army in 1949. He spent his whole life as a carpenter. He built many houses throughout New London County. He was known by many as the treasure hunter. Many people could find him walking McCooks beach with his metal detector over the years.

He was a real treasure in his family and will be deeply missed by many and remembered lovingly by all he has touched.

He was the loving father of his four daughters and one son, Cheryl Williams and her husband, Ron, Teri John and her husband, Adam, Sandra Decoteaux, Shelly Shyner and James Perkins III; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren, with one more on the way.

He was predeceased by his precious granddaughter Melissa Robinson.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons East Lyme Funeral Home, 48 Grand St., Niantic. Funeral service and interment will be private.
