James M. "Jim" Furey

James Furey Obituary

Stonington - James "Jim" M. Furey, 74, of Stonington, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009, at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London.

Born in Providence, he was the son of the late George and H. Mildred (Colby) Furey.

Jim attended local schools and was a graduate of Stonington High School Class of 1953, living in Wequetequock all of his life, of which he was proud.

Shortly after high school, Jim married his high school sweetheart, Giovanna Venturini on Oct. 23, 1954, in Mystic, who sadly predeceased him in 2001.

For many years he was employed with Monsanto Co., finishing his career with Amtech East, retiring in 2000. Jim was a proud member of Local 163 of the International Molders & Allied Workers Union, AFL-CIO serving as president for four years and eight years as secretary.

Jim was a skilled wood crafter, an avid UConn women's basketball, Boston Red Sox, and New England Patriots fan. He also enjoyed bird watching and was known to many as "Grampy". Jim will be remembered for his patience, generosity, and kindness, along with his favorite quote, "Do you want a poke in the nose?", and singing with his grandchildren on the way to the Poppe Shop, the "Poppe Shop Song", a playful song he made up himself.

He leaves his three children, James M. Furey Jr. of Stonington, Janine M. Furey of Groton, and Patrick Furey and his wife, Kathleen, of New London; two sisters, Dorothy Pelchat and her husband, Rudy, of Pawcatuck and Mildred LaMarche and her husband, Jerome, of Mystic; three beloved grandchildren, Jaime L. Furey of Stonington, Sarah Moran and her husband, Chris, of Warwick, R.I., and Jordan Furey of Groton; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at the Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1, Mystic. Funeral services and burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society (www.cancer,org) or to CPTV (www.cpbn.org).

I just wanted to say I was sad to hear that My Furey passed away. I've known Mr Furey for several years while working for Dr. Russ and Dr. Lang. He was always a kind and pleasant man and I always looked forward to seeing him. I will miss him.

This man and his family played a larger role in my life than they will ever know and when I needed help he opened his heart and home. Many laughs and tears are now remembered and he remains in my heart one of the "good people" of this Earth. My condolences to the family.

Dear Millie and Dot. So much of my childhood was shared with your wonderful family (right down the street) - the dances at the Community House, swimming down at "the Bridge" etc. - you will all always be there. You're here with many blessings, you leave with many blessings. May God hold Jimmy in his hands.

Our love and caring to you and to James, Janine and Jordan.
Though we only met your Dad a few times, we remember his warm smile and his obvious delight in each of his children. You are all the great treasures of his life.
