Jane Wheeler Sharples Obituary
Groton - Jane Wheeler Sharples, of Groton Long Point, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013.

She was born in Norwich on Aug. 8, 1951, to Warren Grant Sharples and Evelyn (Wheeler) Sharples. Along with her younger sister, Anne, she grew up in Norwich and spent her summers at the shore where she embraced with joy her love of the ocean. Jane graduated from Norwich Free Academy in 1969 and earned her degree at Boston's Lasell in 1971.

She began her career in advertising design and production at Kaplan Travel Agency in New London and at the Norwich Bulletin. Jane blossomed as art production manager of The Nation magazine in New York City, where she deftly dealt with looming deadlines and huge egos for more than 25 years. Initially fueled by her work at Kaplan, Jane traveled across the country, throughout Europe and to India and Egypt. Surrounding herself with the serenity of the water, she particularly loved the Caribbean, especially Anguilla and Saint Barts.

Along with her penchant for swimming and reading at the beach, Jane developed a love of entertaining friends and cooking sumptuous meals for them. As a legacy to her parents, who loved the arts, she generously supported local artists, particularly painters.

Jane leaves her sister, Anne, to cherish the memory of Jane's spontaneity, fearlessness and never-ending spark. She also leaves her lifetime loyal and caring friends.

In keeping with Jane's indomitable spirit, she lived life on her own terms, as evident in her mantra: "We're not here for a long time. We're here for a good time."

Visitation for family and friends will be 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl St., Mystic. Burial will be private. A memorial tribute will be held at a later date.
