Montville - Joan C. Banta of 22 New York Road, Oakdale, passed away April 9, 2009, surrounded by her loving family.

Joan was born March 29, 1936, in New London, and was the daughter of the late Herbert and Katherine King of Niantic.

Joan married her childhood sweetheart, Charles Banta Sr., and they enjoyed 44 wonderful years of marriage.

Joan was predeceased by her husband, her sister, Patricia Kelly Crowley, and grandson, Timothy K. Rice.

She is survived by her sister, Donna Harman and her husband, Bill, and brother, James King and his wife, Pamela. Joan is also survived by her six children, Deborah Grenier and her husband, Maurice, Charles Banta Jr. and his wife, Pearl, Katherine Rice and her husband, Daniel, Christopher James Banta, Caroline Sylvia and her husband, Dave, and Jacqueline Blaise and her husband, Dennis. Joan also leaves behind 11 wonderful grandchildren who affectionally call her "Grandmier."

Joan's passion was the Dallas Cowboys, and during the summer she was always by the pool on her deck enjoying her family and watching a Red Sox game. Joan had many fond memories in her life and being with her late husband, Charlie; playing slots at the casino was her favorite. She will be sadly missed by all who touched her life.

The family would like to thank Lawrence & Memorial Hospital, Yale-New Haven Hospital, The William W. Backus Hosptial, and Greentree Manor for their thoughtful support.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Catholic Charities, Diocese of Norwich, 331 Main St., Norwich CT 06360.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 181 Ocean Ave., New London. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery, New London. A calling hour will be held one hour prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
