John Gibson Obituary

East Haddam - John Charles Gibson, 89, of East Haddam, passed away at home Oct. 4th, 2018. Known to his friends as "Doctor John", he was born in Port Chester, N.Y. Sept. 9th, 1929. He was the son of the late Joseph and Constance Gibson.

John was a proud veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He attended Taft School in Watertown, and received his B.A. from Beloit College, Beloit, Wis. He worked as an executive in the insurance business for many years. After retirement, he became a professional baker, attending the King Arthur Baking School in Vermont, baking bread for all his friends and family. He also taught baking at Manchester Community College.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge and served many years in the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He also was active in the Hadlyme Congregational Church. John loved to learn new things and was always trying something new.

He will be sadly missed but will live on in the hearts of his family, Debra Dolliver of Vineyard Haven, Mass.; Jeffrey Gibson of Colo.; five grandchildren, Jessica, Courtney, Erik Dolliver, Kyle and Grant Gibson; and his many friends. He was predeceased by his sister, Jean.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17th, 2018, at the Hadlyme Congregational Church, 47 Town Street, Hadlyme. Full Military honors will follow the service. My heart broke when I heard the news and work hasn't been the same since you left us. I will forever miss you and the frequent encounters we've had over the past 6+ years. Whether we laughed over the inaccuracies of weather forecasters, your jokes, or life in general, delivering mail was more than job when I approached your home. It was a friendship I held close to my heart then, today and forever. God Bless you Mr. Gibson and may your family find the peace and strength they need to continue in the days ahead without your presence. Until we meet again...love and miss you bunches!

VFW Post 3336 will miss our life member and Trustee for many years. John always had a joke to tell when he attended a meeting. When he was baking, John would bring something to share with the membership which everyone enjoyed.
