John Hudnut Lockwood Obituary
Mattituck, N.Y. - John Hudnut Lockwood, 88, died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012, at The Carriage House in Westerly.

Born May 2, 1924, in Boston, Mass., he grew up in Poland, Ohio and lived in Mattituck, N.Y. He served in World War II on patrol craft #1123 in the Pacific. He graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder and then began a career in the family steel business.

His passion in life was sailing and he was a proud member of the Peconic Bay Sailing Association, Shelter Island Yacht Club, Off Soundings Club, Storm Trysail Club, Mystic River Mudhead Sailing Association, and Larchmont Yacht Club. He was a founder of the Old Cove Yacht Club. John was particularly known for his Herreshoff Newport 29 "Dolphin" which he successfully campaigned throughout New England for over 50 years.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia of Mattituck, N.Y.; his daughter, Robin (Lockwood) Hall and her husband, Jeff, and their son, John Lockwood Hall of North Stonington; his brother, Edward Lockwood of Traverse City, Mich.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He also leaves two step-sons, Bruce Cochran of Frisco, Colo., and Richard Lesnikowski of Mattituck.

He was predeceased by third step-son, Tovey Lesnikowski; his sister, Mary Oakes of Stonington; and his brother, William Bruce Lockwood Jr. of Groton Long Point, who died just 26 days prior.

A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, on family property located at 906 Old Harbor Road, New Suffolk, N.Y. The celebration will be under a tent so please dress accordingly.
