Ledyard - Joseph Catania, 85, of Gales Ferry, entered eternal life on Thursday, March 29, 2012, at home in the company of his loving family.
He was born Sept. 7, 1926, in Manhattan, N.Y., the son of the late Salvatore and Annie (Battiato) Catania. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp. during World War II serving in the Pacific theater. After being honorably discharged, he was united in marriage to the former Eileen Brecht on May 6, 1960, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Mrs. Catania survives him. Joseph was employed at Pfizer in N.Y. and moved to Gales ferry in 1971 with his family. He worked as a chemist for 43 years, retiring in 1991. During his years at Pfizer, he was a member of the Pfizer Pistol Team and Bowling Team at Holiday Bowl in Groton. He was a member of the American Legion and the former Gales Ferry VFW Post 10861. After retiring, he and his wife traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and abroad. He enjoyed his garden at home and was a master gardener at Connecticut College. He loved making homemade wine and baking. Up until his death, he was devoted to his wife of nearly 62 years and was her caregiver after having a stroke. They enjoyed bowling together at the Coast Guard Academy.
He is survived by two daughters, Gioia and Mia Catania both of Gales Ferry; and a granddaughter, Ariel Catania of Baltic.
He was predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law, William and Josephine Catania.
His family will receive relatives and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Impellitteri-Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Ave., New London. The funeral will assemble at 10 a.m. Saturday and proceed to a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 1650 Rt. 12, Gales Ferry. Interment with military honors will be in Avery-Stoddard Cemetery.
