Montville - Joseph P. Vendola, 90, husband of the late Lillian (Fiedorowicz) Vendola, of 1691 Norwich-New London Tpke., Uncasville, died Sunday, April 15, 2012, at The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich.|
Born in Groton, on Oct. 17, 1921, he was the son of the late John and Fotuna (Della Torre) Vendola.
A veteran of World War II with the U.S. Army, he was honorably discharged with th rank of private first class and had received the Bronze Star along with other decorations.
He was still employed as a floor manager at Tri-Town Foods in Uncasville and was expecially fond of the owners and his extended family at the former Beit Brothers, now Tri-Town Foods.
On Sept. 24, 1949, at St. John Church in Uncasville, he was united in marriage to Lillian (Fiedorowicz) Vendola, who died on Jan. 3, 2009.
He was also predeceased by two brothers, Frank and Lou Vendola, and two sisters, Mary Delaporta and Christine Salerno.
Surviving are his two children and their spouses, John J. Vendola and his wife, Stacie Brown, of Uncasville, and Susan Vendola and her husband, Michael Harrison, of Plantation, Fla.; a sister, Ann Lamperelli of Norwich; and numberous nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Mass will take place at 10 a.m. on Firday at St. John Church, Maple Ave., Uncasville, meeting directly at the church, with interment to follow in St. Patrick Cemetery, Uncasville, with military honors. There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, donations are asked to be made in his memory to Hospice Southeastern Connecticut, 227 Dunham St., Norwich, CT 06360.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the doctors and staff at Backus Hospital for the outstanding care and compassion extended to them and their father at this difficult time.
