Groton - Josephine (Mammone) Franco, 86, passed away at home on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012, with her family and church brethren by her side.

She was born in Groton, on May 3, 1926, to Emmanuel and Louise Mammone.

Josie was a life long resident of Groton and a 1944 graduate of Robert E. Fitch High School. She worked at The Savings Bank of New London until she married and started a family. Later she worked for her twin sister, Mary, at Mali Books in Groton. In 1970, Josie and Tony opened "A Little Piece of Italy" an Italian Deli located on Trails Corner in Groton. After selling the business seven years later, she returned to work at New England Savings bank (formerly The Savings Bank of New London). She has been residing with her family, Jewel, Jonathan and Paul Benson for the past 12 years.

Josie's passion was her relationship with God and she was a lifelong student of the Bible. She and her family became part of the "Bible Students Association" when she was nine years old. At age 16, she dedicated her life to serving God. Josie loved to attend bible studies and spent hours at home reading and studying. She will always be remembered for sharing God's plan with others, singing hymns with a passion and her generous hospitality.

We thank God for her life and example. We also are thankful to the caring members of hospice and all those who offered support and prayers.

1 Corinthians 15:22 "For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive".

Josie was predeceased by her husband of 35 years, Anthony F. Franco Jr. in Dec. 1987.

She is survived by her two daughters, Joy (Franco) Mateyov and Jewel (Franco) Benson; son-in- laws, Craig Mateyov and Jonathan Benson; three grandchildren, Kristen Mateyov, Paul Benson and Craig A. Mateyov; great-grandson, John Idhe; twin sister, Mary Mali and brother-in-law, Paul Mali. She was also blessed to have caring and devoted nieces, a loving extended family and church brethren who were a very special part of her life.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Byles-Groton, Memorial Home, 310 Thames St., Groton. Her burial will follow in the Colonel Ledyard Cemetery in Groton.
