New London - Julienne Elfrida Nunes, 95, of New London, passed away peacefully at home, in the company of her loving family, on Monday, July 2, 2012.

The daughter of Thaddeus and Josephine Hodge, "Julie" was born Feb. 16,1917, in Grand Case, St. Martin F.W.I. She married Francis Nunes April 12, 1951, at St. Theresa Church in St. Nicolas, Aruba. Mr. Nunes died Nov. 12,1999. Julie attended Juliana High School in Curacao Neth Ant from 1928-1932. She was employed by Lago Oil and Transport Company from 1938 to 1955 as a record clerk for the Lago Oil Police Dept. She lived in Aruba for eighteen years where she was better known as "Freda" before moving to New London in 1955 and became a self-employed Avon rep for over thirty years, and was a member of the Avon Presidents Club, a prestigious group of Avon top sales representatives. Julie was 57-year communicant of St. Joseph Church and a member of the choir during the 1960's.

Her passions included cake decorating and floral arrangements for which she took courses at New London High School and became certified in each. Julie was also a seamstress in her spare time, as well as a member of the Pfizer duckpin bowling league, an avid Belote player (one of the most popular French card games), and a voracious Mets fan from their inception. She was also a member of the Daughters of Isabella. Another of Julie's passions was travel. Her fond memories included stories about trips to Europe, South America, Canada, and of course, the Caribbean and the U.S. Her ability to speak five languages made this particular hobby that much easier and more enjoyable.

She is survived by her devoted son, Francis Paul Nunes Jr. of Waterford and his girlfriend/caregiver, Beth Mongeau, as well as three sisters, Bridgette Trappenberg of Aruba, Maria Duin of St. Thomas, and Florence Kievits of Norwich.

She was predeceased by six siblings, Manno, Papul, Lorenzo, Abeil, Charlotte Duzant, and Antwan Hodge.

Her family will receive relatives and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 8, at the Impellitteri-Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Ave., New London. The funeral will assemble at 9 a.m. Monday, July 9, and proceed to a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Church. Interment at St. Mary Cemetery.

Donations may be made in her memory to St. Jude Children Hospital, P.O. Box 3704 , Memphis, TN 38173-9966.
