Lawrence Levine Obituary

Mystic - Lawrence Levine of Stoneridge in Mystic, formerly of Waterford, passed away quietly at home, on Wednesday, April 10, 2013.

Larry was the widower of Sandy (Cohen) Levine, who died in Sept. 2012. He was born on Dec. 6, 1929, in New London, the fifth and youngest child of Isadore and Ada (Reiner) Levine. He attended public schools in New London and was a proud graduate of Chapman Technical High School. After a short enlistment in the Air Force, he returned to Connecticut. He married Sandy in 1954. Working his way through college in part by selling Good Humor ice cream, he graduated from the University of Connecticut and they started their family.

With many dedicated colleagues, Larry taught children at Clark Lane Junior High School in Waterford for 27 years as part of the social studies faculty, the latter years as department head. He founded and led the Waterford Federation of Classroom Teachers from its inception until his retirement.

Larry was a businessman, owning and operating Rapid Car Wash and other businesses in the area. He was very active in local Democratic politics serving Waterford on the Board of Education, the Planning and Zoning Commission, the Board of Tax Review and the Town Committee. For many years, Larry was a Justice of the Peace, celebrating many couples' weddings.

Larry was predeceased by his wife of 58 years; and his four siblings, Arthur, Henry and Robert Levine and Dolly Eckstadt.

He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Barry Levine, Anne Jerome, Noah and Linda Levine, all of New London, Seth Levine of Middletown, and David Levine and Sarah Smith-Levine of Colchester. He is also survived by his six grandchildren, whom he adored, Isaac, Eli, Ethan, Austin, Sarah and Shayna Levine, all of New London. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Jean Asmond of Florida; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends and family are invited to gather for a celebration of Larry's life at 2 p.m. April 21, 2013, at Stoneridge auditorium in Mystic.

In lieu of flowers, contributions are welcome to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation (pdf.org).

I will never forget Mr. Levine. He was a kind, devoted teacher who truly cared about his students. He gave me my first sense of civic duty with his passion for politics and democracy. I'm so thankful I grew up in a time when a teacher could offer a student a hug or pat on the shoulder without it being construed as abuse. To this day I feel privileged to have known Larry Levine and been one of his students.

We lived in the same neighborhood and our families,Bill and Nancy Dickinson, were good friends. Mr. Levine was also my 8th grade histoy teacher. I loved his class. He made history very interesting. I remember instead of having desks, we all sat in a circle. Mr. Levine and his wife Sandy were wonderful people. I live in Florida and saw them a few times when they came here. I always enjoyed their visits. My heart goes out to his family. He will be greatly missed.

Let me be the first to say how sad I am that Mr. Levine has died. I had him for a teacher at Clark Lane Jr High in Waterford. He was a generous and inspiring teacher. He had a way of exposing students to higher moral notions from literature and history.

Although he was Jewish, ironically, one of his lectures about selfless love as a Christian notion stuck with me at an early age.

Later on while in High School and college, I worked at Radio Shack in the NL Shopping Center. A few doors down was the Gold Crown Billiards parlor which Mr. Levine or one of his family members owned. He used to work the front desk near the door. Nestled between the door and the desk was a pay phone and a tall stool. I used to walk down there on my breaks and call my girlfriend.

Mr. Levine was such a genuine and caring guy, that it did not bother me that he was right there sometimes listening to my conversation with my girlfriend. It was like calling from your favorite bar with your long time friend bar tender standing near by.

Mr. Levine was a lovely man. I have to believe that he touched hundreds of kids' lives as he did mine.

To Larry's Family, I was a classmate of Larry's at Chapman Tech in the Class of 1947,the very best class of them all. We shared many classes and extracurricular activities together; he was a good friend. It was wonderful to see him, to renew our friendship, and to meet his wife,Sandy, at our 55th Reunion in 2002. We are having our 66th and last Class Reunion this fall-I will miss his smile and warm personality but will always remember that portion of the life journey we shared from 1943-1947. I send you, his devoted family, my heartfelt sumpathy.

It saddened me to see Mr. Levin's obituary in the paper. He was my favorite teacher at Waterford High school during the 60's. He made P.O.D. class so exciting for me. I didn't care for History but Mr. Levine changed that for me. Several years later I was happy to have him as my neighbor in Ridgewood Park. He was truly a wonderful man and I was really touched by his passing. I know that God has welcomed him.
