Groton - Lois Baumes Ackley, of 97 North Road in Groton, passed away in the early morning of Sunday, June 10, 2007.|
Lois was born in Groton on Aug. 13, 1918, the daughter of Lora and Will Baumes.
She married Ralph Ackley Sr. on May 30, 1940, and spent 53 loving years together with "Dude". They had three children, Ralph of Texas, Alan of Groton, and Deborah of Mystic. In addition to her children, she leaves two daughters-in-law, Pamela Ackley from Cleburne, Texas and Lisa Ackley, of Groton; and five grandchildren, Cristin, Vanessa, Elyse, Tyler, and Cameron. She also leaves six great-grandchildren.
Lois attended local schools and graduated from Fitch Senior High School in June 1935. After high school she attended Western Union School in New Jersey, coming back to the New London Western Union office and working in to 1940's. She then began a career at General Dynamics as secretary of finance and accounting. Upon retirement, she worked at the family package store as Permittee until 2005.
Lois was wife, mother and grandmother who loved, supported, and took care of her family unconditionally. She will be remembered by her sweet smile, her joyful heart and service to others.
She is preceded in death her husband, her son Ralph Jr. and sister, Eleanor Horelick
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 16, 2007 at the Smith Lake Cemetery in Groton. There will be no visiting hours.
Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St., is assisting the family with the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to The American Cancer Society.
After the service the Ackley family welcomes you back to Par Four Restaurant at Shennecosset Golf Course in Groton, for a light lunch and gathering to celebrate Lois' life.
