Lois Marie Adkins Obituary
Waterford - Lois Marie Adkins, born June 2, 1923, in Kane, Pa. to Ernest M. Retzer and Hilma Larson Retzer, passed away Monday morning at her home in Waterford.

She married Joel Dean Adkins, Sr. on June 8, 1944, in St. Paul, Minn.

She attended Wilcox High School in Pennsylvania and Hoff Business College in Warren, Pa. Lois worked for the Resident Inspector of Naval Materials in the office at the old Elliott Co., in Ridgway, Pa., where she met Joel during World War II. During their marriage, they lived in various places such as Panama, Canal Zone, Key West, Fla., Charleston, S.C., Groton, Rosemount, Minn., New London and finally in 1956, Waterford. Lois worked for the Waterford Board of Education in the cafeterias at Clark Lane Jr. High School and Waterford High School for twelve years. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of New London since 1961, and served on various committees there through the years, as well as singing in the senior choir for fifteen years. Her full time job was bringing up six children.

She is survived by a brother, Ernest N. Retzer of Bradford, Pa.; children, Mona E. Chalmers of Waterford, Joel D. Adkins, Jr. of Gaylord, Mich., Randall K. Adkins of Orono, Maine, Timothy S. Adkins of Waterford, Gail K. Rogers of Scotland, Conn. and Janet M. Adkins of Ledyard; twelve grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren with one great-grandchild on the way; and many nieces and nephews.

Lois was predeceased by her husband, Joel D. Adkins Sr. formerly of Waterford and a brother, Richard L. Retzer formerly of Ridgway.

A memorial service will be held at noon on Wednesday at the First Congregational Church, Union and State Sts., New London. Her burial in the Jordan Cemetery will be private for the family. Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London is assisting the family with the arrangements.
