New London - Margaret (Rathbun) Scheide, 83, of Lyme, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012, at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London, after a brief illness, with her immediate family by her side.|
Born in New London, on Sept. 5, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Douglas J. and Lillian (Morlock) Rathbun of Lyme. She was a graduate of Williams Memorial Institute in New London, and Bennett College in Millbrook, N.Y.
She was predeceased by her loving husband of 51 years, Philip Cornell Scheide, who she married on June 11, 1955, in Old Lyme. In 2009, she married her childhood friend, Robert Haines Johnson, who died in 2010.
Peggy was a lovely lady who found great joy in everything she did each day. Her greatest love was her family, her husbands, her four children and their spouses, and her eight grandchildren.
She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Colonial Dames, and was a direct descendant of William Brewster who came over on the Mayflower. She was also a direct descendant of John Rathbone, an original purchaser and settler of Block Island.
She and Mr. Scheide were longtime members of the Old Lyme Beach Club, and she was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in New London. She was past president of The Lyme Garden Club and was an accredited flower show judge, as well as a gifted flower show arranger and designer. She was an avid gardener, knowledgeable horticulturist, and a talented needlepointer. Peggy was loved by her family and friends and will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her four children, James Rathbun Scheide of Old Lyme, Jane Scheide Schellens and her husband, Tom, of Old Lyme, Sarah Scheide Voda and her husband, Dennis, of West Warwick, R.I., and Philip Cornell Scheide Jr. of Moodus; as well as her sister, Judith Rathbun Whitney of Chester. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren who she cherished, Win, Jamie, and Christopher Schellens, Alexandra and James Scheide, Samantha and Madeline Voda, and Ethan Scheide.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 30, 2012, in St. James Church, 76 Federal St., New London.
