Mystic - Mark Edward Smith, 51, of Mystic, formerly of Warren, Mich., was received by the Lord on Saturday, July 7, 2012.

He was born on May 2, 1961, to Patricia F. Wichtner and Marquis A. Smith in New London. Mark was a graduate of Henry Ford II High School in Sterling Heights, Mich., where he grew up. He was an avid NASCAR fan and recently traveled to many races. He was employed as a machinist at Electric Boat in Groton.

Mark was an active and longtime member of Alcoholics Anonymous in Michigan, Connecticut, and Washington. He was an inspiration and sponsor to many in the program during his years of service. Mark was a regular blood donor to the American Red Cross and a registered organ donor. Mark was able to assist Carolina Donor Services in helping seven individuals upon his passing.

Mark was preceded in death by both parents, brother, Jason A. Smith, and son, Allen J. Smith.

Mark is survived by step parents, Raymond P. Jebing of Warren, Barbara A. Smith and Alvin Thurston of Mystic; sisters, Deborah Farmer and husband, Lewis, of Warren, Denise Janowski of Warren, and Stephanie Kisell and husband, Chris, of Clinton Twp., Mich. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins in Michigan and Connecticut.

Friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life gathering from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, July 13, 2012, at Riverwood Community Church, 12000 Clinton River Road, Sterling Heights, MI.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his honor be made to your local Alcoholics Anonymous Chapter or the American Red Cross.
