Waterford - Dr. Martin Jeffrey Frank, surrounded by his devoted family and friends, died after a long battle with renal cell cancer.

He was the son of Hortense (Hirsch) and Nathan Frank. Dr. Frank was born in Abilene, Texas, where his father was stationed in the Army. Dr. Frank was raised in Jersey City, N.J. He attended Rutgers University, New York Medical College, and completed his residency and cardiac fellowship at Georgetown and George Washington University. Dr. Frank began his medical practice at the Yater Clinic in Washington DC, but he relocated to Connecticut after discovering the state's beauty. He practiced in Old Saybrook and Middletown and settled in New London in 1983. Dr. Frank loved practicing medicine. He enjoyed the challenge of a difficult diagnosis and was stimulated by discussions with his colleagues. He truly believed in private practice and cared deeply about his patients. After his 1999 cancer diagnosis, he received unending support and unforgettable kindness from his patients.

Those who knew him, know he liked a good joke and an occasional prank. He was devoted to his family, his friends, and to fly fishing. He was often heard in the halls of Lawrence & Memorial Hospital on Monday morning lamenting about the "one that got away."

Dr. Frank is survived by his wife, Cele; and sons, Seth, Matt, and Trevor of Waterford, who gave their father loving and compassionate care as his illness progressed. His sister, Bobbi Portes of London, England, and her children, Alison (Phil) and Jonathan Portes. His aunt, Rita Arkin (David) and cousins, Bruce and Donald Hirsch. His mother-in-law, Kay Latta; his sister-in-law, Barbara (Jim) Benish; brothers-in-law, Mark (Christine) Latta and Jim (Candace) Latta; nieces, Abby, Clare, Erin; nephews, Karl (Kana) and Ian; and grand-nephews, Alex, Matthew, and Nicolas; and his grand-niece, Viki.

He was predeceased by his parents, uncle, and father-in-law.

Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, at Congregation Beth El, 660 Ocean Ave., New London. Family will observe Shiva from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, at 217 Shore Road, Waterford, and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2.
