Groton - Martin P. Artale Sr., 86, of Riverview Ave., Groton, passed away Friday, Nov. 9, 2012, at the Fairview in Groton.
He was born on May 12, 1926, in Queens, N.Y., the son of Mario and Rose (Ugucconni) Artale. Marty was married to the former Jennie Grillo on April 18, 1949 in Westerly. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and had also earned his high school degree from Fitch High School while he was in the service.
Marty began his professional career with the City of Groton Police Dept in 1951. He left the Police Department in 1975 as a sergeant transferring to the City's Dept. of Utilities, where he worked until his retirement in 1989. Mr. Artale was member of the Sacred Heart Church in Groton, a life member of the Groton Lodge of Elks, the NRA and a former member of the Fraternal Order of Police.
Besides his wife, Marty is survived by his sons, Edward and Deb Artale of Salem, Martin P. Artale Jr. and Veronica Polaski of Groton; his sister, Norma Younderman of Ellington; two grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 19, at the Sacred Heart Church, Sacred Heart Drive, Groton.
In lieu of flowers, his family has requested that any donations be directed to Children's Research, c/o St. Jude's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
