Montville - Milton Arthur Heberding "Many Claws", 82, of Uncasville, passed away at his home on Aug. 3, 2012.
He was born on March 16, 1930, in Norwich, to the late Christopher and Florence (Sholes) Heberding.
He married his loving wife, Meryl (Fielding) Heberding, on Sept. 27, 1952, at the Montville Methodist Church. She predeceased him in 2009.
"Pa" as he was known by everyone, enjoyed fishing, hunting, archery, or to just sit on his porch telling stories to his family and friends. He was an avid craftsman who built his own home and loved doing wood crafts, walking sticks, and leather work. He was a member of the Connecticut River Pow Wow Society and the Eagle Wing Press. He was a lifetime Deacon at the Mohegan Congregational Church. He and his wife were major contributors to the revitalization of the Mohegan Pow Wow and even traveled to Arizona to participate in the New Year's Eve Pow Wow in 2000.
Milton is survived by a sons, Thomas Heberding Sr. and his wife, Catherine, of Uncasville and Daniel Heberding and his wife, Elizabeth, of Stafford Springs; daughters, Carol Johnson and her husband, Michael, of Ledyard, Kathleen Bernier and her husband, Larry, of Norwich, and Linda Jordan of Norwich; and a daughter-in-law, Joyce Heberding of Gales Ferry. He also leaves behind 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, Christopher Heberding.
Family and friends may visit from 5 to 8 p.m on Monday at the Montville Funeral Home of Church and Allen, 53 Norwich New London Tpke., Uncasville. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at Fort Shantok Burial Ground.
