Nancy Hart Obituary
East Haddam - Nancy (Brown) Hart, 79, of Haddam Neck, passed away at Chestelm Health and Rehab on Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, after a long illness.

Born in 1933 in Denver, Colorado, Nancy was the only child of Robert Wellington and Louisa (Rhodes) Brown. She was raised in Denver until the family relocated east in 1944 to the Boston area. She graduated from the Cambridge School of Weston in 1951 and Connecticut College in 1955. Shortly after their marriage in 1957, she and Bob purchased a Colonial period farmhouse in Haddam Neck which was their home for over 50 years. Nancy received her master's degree from Wesleyan University in 1959 and continued taking courses there for the next 30 years including a geology class which allowed her to canoe the length of the Connecticut River. She received her teaching certificate from Central Connecticut State University. For 23 years, she was a science teacher at Haddam Jr. High School and Haddam-Killingworth High School retiring in 1994. She later became the education coordinator at the Haddam Historical Society and was awarded their Founders Day Award in 1996.

Nancy ran the Haddam Killingworth High School ski club for many years after learning how to ski in her forties. She later taught skiing at Powder Ridge and enjoyed the slopes throughout the northeast and west.

Nancy served as the chairwoman of the Burr District Elementary School Building Committee which oversaw the design and construction of the school which was completed in 1970. She also served on the Haddam Inland Wetlands and Conservation Commission. Nancy was a long-time member of the Haddam Neck Congregational Church where she held many positions including Sunday school teacher, music director, and choir member. She also was a member of the Haddam Neck Quilt Group and Ladies Aid Society.

She was a dedicated garden volunteer at Harkness Memorial State Park where she started research on a book about the Harkness Family. She also volunteered at Connecticut Public Radio, Connecticut Public TV, Brainerd Memorial Library in Haddam and the Haddam Neck Fair. Nancy was a talented gardener, artist, and crafter and enjoyed history and compiling her family genealogy. She loved to travel and enjoyed many family trips and Elderhostel programs.

She is survived by daughter, Elizabeth Malloy and her husband, David, of Haddam Neck, daughter, Catherine Morrison and her husband, Kenneth, of Haddam Neck; and son, Robert R. Hart and his wife, Carolyn, of East Haddam. She also leaves behind cherished grandchildren, Hannah, Grace and David Malloy, Mary Morton, Corey, Stephen, Luke and Ethan Hart.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert W. Hart.

A memorial is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Haddam Neck Congregational Church, 408 Quarry Hill Road, Haddam Neck.
