New London - Norma Elizabeth (Suggs) Albright, 82, of 29 Cape Ann Court, New London, departed this world on Saturday night, Sept. 6, 2008, at Beechwood Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in New London.
She was born June 6, 1926, in New London, the daughter of James and Viola Suggs.
Mrs. Albright graduated from Chapman Technical High School in 1946 and then graduated from Tuskegee Institute in Alabama with a degree in elementary education. She furthered her education at both Roger Williams College and Mitchell College with advanced degrees.
She taught physical education, but after being injured on the job, she changed careers to social work. Mrs. Albright served as director of welfare for the City of New London, retiring in 1993 after over 20 years.
Mrs. Albright is a lifetime member of Shiloh Baptist Church in New London, sang in the Gospel Chorus and organized Shiloh's Agape Ministry for many years. For many years she served as president and life member of the New London Chapter of NAACP, was a life member of Excelsior Temple #144 IBPOE of W, Past Matron and member of Electa Chapter #7, Order of Eastern Star, president and life member of New London Chapter of NCNW, and a founding community member of the New London Community Resources Commission.
Left behind to cherish her memories are her son, James Albright of New London; a special daughter who loved and cared for her, Lois Rodgers of New London; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was predeceased by her parents; a sister, Anna Butler; and brothers, Oscar, James, Louis, and Edward Suggs.
The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Shiloh Baptist Church, One Garvin St., New London. Private burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
