New London - Peg Weller, beloved sister, mother and grandmother, passed away on Tuesday, April 23 , 2013, at Beechwood Manor in New London, where she had resided since March of 2012.

Peg was an Ohio girl, born in Marysville on Jan. 16, 1921, to George and Esther (Emmert) Scheiderer. After attending local schools, she then entered the Mt. Carmel School of Nursing, graduating in 1941. In 1942, she met and married her first husband, Dick Riddle. Their marriage was tragically brief, lasting just a six days, as his Air Force bomber crashed on Presque Isle, Maine. In 1943, while working at Ohio Wesleyan University's Infirmary, she was introduced to her future husband, Ensign Robert Weller. Peg was swept off her feet, and the two married at the famous "Little Church Around the Corner" in New York City on Oct. 20, 1943.

After the war, Peg and Bob moved to the Boston area while he pursued his graduate work in education at Harvard University, and eventually settled in New London, upon his employment as president of Mitchell Junior College. Peg and Bob lived in the "Umbrella Cottage" on campus for 36 years until his retirement in 1987. During this time, Peg raised her five children and developed deep and lasting friendships. Many hours were spent playing cards in the backyard with friends, gardening and having family picnics with her sister Becky's family after spending the day at Mitchell Beach.

After Bob's retirement, he and Peg moved to Parkway South in New London. Bob passed away in 2007 after almost sixty four years of marriage. With an irretrievably broken heart, Peg's health began to decline. In 2009, she moved to Crescent Point in Niantic where she resided until illness brought her to Beechwood Manor for her final days.

Peg was a music lover and accomplished pianist, bringing joy to all who heard her play. Peg also enjoyed singing, and provided endless enjoyment for her grandchildren while she and Bob sang old classics and show tunes to entertain them. Bob and Peg traveled throughout the United States and went on many cruises with their good friends, Frank and Eleanor Laycock. An inveterate collector and bargain hunter, she enjoyed antiquing with her friend Chris Haskell. She had a special place in her heart for animals, providing a home for many dogs, birds and a cat over the years. Most of all, she cherished the companionship of her husband, her children and their families, her sister Becky, and her dogs Alfred, Tippy and Sasha.

Peg was predeceased by her parents; husband, Bob; and daughter, Mary Ann (Marni) Lydecker.

She is survived by her daughter, Jan Weller of Groton; sons, David Weller and his significant other, Jen Shusterman, of Waterford, Donald Weller and wife, Suzan, of Niantic; daughter, Barbara Cawley and husband, Jim, of Lyme; son-in-law, Robert Lydecker of Windsor; grandchildren, Daniel Lydecker and his wife, Karen, Kathryn Cawley, Meg Cawley and her fiancé, Seth Gushurst, and Sara Weller; and her great-grandson, Jackson Lydecker. She is also survived by her sister, Rebecca Cox of Waterford, sister-in-law, Michiko Weller of New Jersey; and several nieces and nephews.

Her family would like to thank the staff of Beechwood Manor for their kindness, compassion and care given to Peg.

A celebration of her life will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 26, at Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London. Burial will be private.
