Oakdale - Prentice L. Alexander Jr., 77, of Chapel Hill Road in Oakdale passed away Sunday, Feb. 3, 2008 at his home.

He was born on Sept. 26, 1930 in New London, the son of Prentice L. and Alice Whalen Alexander.

Prentice was educated in local schools and in 1951 enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserves. He was called to active duty in 1952, attended basic submarine school at the U.S. Sub Base, New London, and was assigned duty onboard the USS Sterlet (SS392) at San Diego, Calif. The sub left for Japan in December of 1952, and did patrol duty off the Korean Peninsula for the next six months.

After his discharge he served an apprenticeship at Electric Boat as an inside machinist, and spent 17 yrs working there before taking a similar job with a small manufacturing company in Old Saybrook, where he spent the next 23 years.

Prentice enjoyed studying family history and genealogy as well as fishing.

He also enjoyed all of his grandchildren and their various accomplishments, particularly his youngest granddaughter and her skill on the soccer field.

His affiliations include Oxoboxo Lodge No. 116 F&AM, Master 1966, Sub Vets-Groton Branch, Holland Club, Sons of the American Revolution, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and the Mayflower Society of Connecticut.

His survivors include a daughter, Susan Alexander Weidlich, her husband, Thomas, and their children, Timothy and Julie, a son, Prentice (Bud) Alexander, his wife Brenda and their children, Kelsey, John and Molly, and a son, Daniel Alexander of Florida; his sister-in-law, Marilyn Jenkins Alexander of Newtown; and his beloved cousin and family researcher, Iva Alexander Arpin.

Prentice had also been predeceased by his younger brother, Paul, in January of 2007.

The family will be receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London. His burial will be private.

Donations may be made to the Montville High School Drama Club, Old Colchester Road, Oakdale.
