Groton - Richard Alvan Aldred, 62, of 54 Allen Street died Tuesday, June 17, 2008 at home after loosing his battle with cancer.
Born in New York City, he was the son of James Alvan and Loretta Catherine (Haysette) Aldred. He is survived by his wife, Jo; daughters, Amanda and Elizabeth; and grandson Colby.
Raised in Boston, Richard graduated from Don Bosco High School in 1963 and then the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 1967. He served in the Merchant Marines until 1973 when he went to work at Electric Boat. Richard retired from EB in December of 2006 after 33 years of service. Richard's passion for woodworking led him to develop a small business crafting hand turned wooden pens, which he truly loved.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on 11 a.m. Saturday, June 21, 2008 at at Sacred Heart Church, 56 Sacred Heart Drive in Groton. Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St., Groton is assisting with the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in his name to either Hospice of Southeastern Connecticut, 227 Dunham Street, Norwich, CT 06360 or Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, 365 Montauk Avenue, New London, CT 06320.
