Waterford - Richard F. Singer, 76, of 301 Rope Ferry Road, died Dec. 8, 2012, at Bayview Health Care Center, after a 35-year battle with Parkinson's disease. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Bayview and Vitas Hospice.

Born Jan. 26, 1936, in New Haven, the son of Bernard and Gladys (Fitzmartin) Singer, he was a resident of New Haven until 1969, when he moved to Old Saybrook to practice law. In 1978, he moved to Waterford, where he worked as an assistant public defender in New London, until his retirement in 1985.
Richard was a 1957 graduate of Fairfield University, and he earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of Connecticut Law School in 1969. He worked in private practice and as a public defender for the State of Connecticut throughout his career.
He is survived by his five children, Deborah (Patrick) Turner of Clinton, Richard (Linda Kaplan) Singer of Derwood, Md., Robert (Dalton Huckaby Jr.) Singer of San Francisco, Calif., Elizabeth (James) Hopkins of State College, Pa., and Tara (Timothy) Leach of Clinton; and his nine grandchildren, Benjamin and Elysha Kaplan-Singer, Adam and Jacob Hopkins, Rebecca and Caitlin Turner, Zachary, Kiera, and Trevor Leach. Richard is also survived by his brothers, Bernard (Rosanne), James (Josephine), and Eugene Singer.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 12, at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons East Lyme Funeral Home, 48 Grand St., Niantic. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 13, at St. Paul Church, Rope Ferry Road, Waterford.
