Groton - Robert Chapman Allyn, 98, died March 16, 2007, at Fairview in Groton.
He was born Sept. 12, 1908, the son of Carlos W. and Elizabeth T. Allyn.
He graduated in 1927 from the Loomis Chaffee School and attended Pratt School of Naval Architecture at M.I.T. He worked a year in the design division Bath, Maine shipyard before coming to Groton. He was employed for 37 years in the naval architecture division of General Dynamics, retiring in 1968. He then worked for 20 years at the Mystic Seaport and Marine Museum as a naval architect.
Bob was a charter member of the Thames Yacht Club and a past member of the Shennecossett Yacht Club. He was the secretary of the Colonel Ledyard Cemetery Association and a past assistant treasurer of the City of Groton Utilities Commission. He was a member of Union Lodge of Masons and was a Royal Arch Mason. Bob was a life member of the Mystic Seaport and Marine Museum and a member of the First Church of Christ Congregational in Groton.
Besides his wife, the former Frances Mathewson, Bob is survived by two daughters, Carolyn A. Hanover of Ledyard and Elizabeth Von Dreel of Harbison, Del.; three granddaughters and two grandsons; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Elizabeth Bosworth of Cranston, R.I.
He was predeceased by a sister, Matilda Allyn and two brothers, Wilson and Richard Allyn.
Funeral service and interment in Colonel Ledyard Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family.
