Norwich - Royce E. Neil, 79, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Norwich, passed away Sept. 21, 2012, at Martin Medical Center in Stuart, Fla.

He was born in Norwich, graduated from Norwich Free Academy and from the University of New Haven with a degree in criminal justice. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during the Korean War. He was a state trooper for the State of Connecticut, in which four of those years he served as a resident trooper in Ledyard. After retiring in 1973, he became the director of security at Mitchell College in New London.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Norwich, a longtime member in the Ledyard Sportsman's Club, and founder and past member of the Tuckerburg Club in Ledyard. He was also a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, the Mayflower Descendants, and the Korean War Veterans Post #106 in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

He is survived by his wife, Lilliane Neil of Port St. Lucie; son, James Neil; daughters, Susan Knight, Judy Nee, and Carol Lindgren; four granddaughters and a grandson.

He was predeceased by his sister, Gwen McMahon.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday at Church and Allen Funeral Home, 136 Sachem St., Norwich. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, at the First Baptist Church of Norwich. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery.
