New London - Salvatore John Ruggiero, 94, formerly of 180 Norwood Ave., passed away Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at Crestfield Convalescent Home in Manchester.

Sal was born April 20, 1918, in New London, the son of Francesco and Carmella (Copollo) Ruggiero. He was a graduate of Chapman Technical High School, class of 1937. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was honorably discharged. Mr. Ruggiero retired from Electric Boat in 1976, as a foreman of the riggers and erectors.
Sal was predeceased by the love of his life, Katherine (Olbrys) Ruggiero, whom he married on Sept. 28, 1940, in St. Mary Star of the Sea Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Katherine West of Griswold and Ridge Manor, Fla. and Patricia Ruggiero of Manchester; a sister, Assunta Marie Orkney of Groton; four grandchildren, Doreen West Amata, Kevin Lynch, Shannon West Brenek and Jeffrey Lynch; and six great-grandchildren, Ashley and Kevin Lynch Jr., Christopher and Isabella Amata and Jackson and Bode Brenek.
The family will receive family and friends from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. Saturday, April 28, at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London and proceed to St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 10 Huntington St., New London, for a Mass of Christian Burial at noon. Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, Jefferson Ave., New London.
